Tough choice, I'm from London but am partnered up with a celtic lass and have lived in Ireland off and on plus travel loads. You can really spend more than one lifetime in London let alone in the island of Ireland, on the beaches of Cornwall, in the hills of Wales or the Highlands of Scotland.

I can't agree that all of Ireland is cheaper than all of the UK, especially with the Euro at it's current level. Dublin is not cheap, Belfast in the north of Ireland is not expensive. London is just ridiculous but there are so many budget options for those passing thru that you can go wild and not go for broke.

If you are there for more than a month - do both. Flights between Dublin/Belfast and London/Manchester/Birmingham et cetera aren't too bad (book early for say £50 each all in).

Belfast has some of the most energetic nightlife going and even in the main areas you are guaranteed to meet non-jaded locals partying hard; the same can't be said for Dublin's Temple Bar where most visitors end up and party as strangers in an awesome land. Plus the north has some incredible dramatic sights like the Giant's Causeway, plus superb world class beaches (just not the sun to lounge around on them).

England rocks in so many ways. Cornwall is simply stunning and northern cities like Liverpool and Newcastle have some of the best social action known to man. London is a world unto itself and if you only have a short time, how can you miss one of the few truly stupendous destinations?

So, for young first-time travellers to Europe, stay longer than you planned and make sure your adventure is on both sides of the Irish Sea.

;)

If you stay away from very expensive London, there is probably not a lot of difference costwise. England has much more to do/see than Ireland but you could also split your time between the two.

London England costs more but that is the 2nd best place in the world after new york city. It all depends on if you are a city person or a country person. If you are very very adventurous, then you would always pick a city. If you are laid back and bland, then the Irish countryside.

I am from County Durham, in the North East of England.
Southern Ireland or Eire is good, London is expensive, and don't forget about Wales and Scotland, both are Excellent!

If those are your choices, Ireland, it is lovely and less expensive.

but if I may recommend a third option. Scotland!

It is magnificent, it is lovely, the people are insanely nice and is one of the most romantic places I have ever been to, and that is saying allot.

Definitely Italy. Italy has lots of Catholics too, and I love the culture there. I would like to take trip to Spain though, even though it's in a world of **** right now. Oh I'm from NY.
