REALLY loud and my husband just put brake fluid in it a few wks ago b/c the brake light came on in the dash. It was fine for awhile and the light is still gone but the new symptom of the squeeking appeared. Whats going on and how much will it cost to fix it? Oh and one more thing is it something that my husband can fix himself? Thanks so much!!!!

Brake fluid level low Light came on ????

Noise you be Front brakes on most Cars and trucks...

Cost you be different for each model.... If you can post Year and model most people can give you cost average....

Like my Granddaughters Focus I replaced the Pads and Rotors on the front for under 90.00 and Flushed the Fluid SyStem with DOT 4 fluid.... Rears where still 60% or better...

Definitely agree that it needs a brake job. Call around to a few different garages to see what they charge.

I would advise against taking it to a brake specialty shop.

The reason I say that is because many will get you in with a coupon or low price for a real cheap brake job, then tell you that you're going to need new calipers rotors, etc. That's where they make their money. (Your car may actually need some additional parts, but brake shops are bad about over-hyping problems to get a sale, or outright telling a lie)

The best place for this job is an independent garage that is recommended by a few friends or co-workers. They are usually best at telling you exactly what you'll need without trying to sell additional stuff (dealer is also a good place for this, but for a brake job can be pricey).

Many modern vehicles are set so that when the fluid reaches a certain level, it triggers the light, it does this so you will take your vehicle in when the light comes on to ahve it checked out, and then you have your brake pads replaced. Obviously, it doesn't always work as designed as in your case since your husband filled the level, so the squealers are another sign to akert you about worn-out brakes.

The squealers are little metal tabs that make it squeal telling you that you have very little brake pad material left. If you ignore it, it will start grinding metal to metal and then you will likely need to replace at least the rotors, possibly the calipers and other parts (not to mention potential total loss of brakes).

On your vehicle, you should only need replacement pads and the rotors turned. It is possible that rotors will need replaced, but unlikely unless it's had a brake job before.

A brake fluid flush would be beneficial as brake fluid absorbs moisture and should be flushed from time to time, but you could probably get away without it if money is tight.

I've been told that squeaking is usually due to dust being on the brake. Depending on your husbands experience then it is hard to say? Has he worked on other cars before and do you trust him to be fiddling with your life line to getting your car to slow down when you are going 70 MPH?
It is hard to say how much it would cost to repair, I've seen ad's starting from $60-$140 (parts only) so I would suggest looking in the yellow pages for a 'brake specialist' and not a quicky place that just does oil changes, cause they won't help you.

You need new brakes and possibly rotors, immediately! It's squeeling to let you know this. Your husband could fix it, but do you trust him too?? You really need your brakes. Know what I mean? You can spend anywhere from $300-$400. If your hubby does it, it'll cost much less, but may be much less safe, also.

Brake pads have two grooves inside them. At first they are covered over by your thick new brake pads but as your breaks wear down the grooves are exposed and when you brake it creates a loud whistling noise to alert the driver it is time for new brake pads. In Florida they advertise 99$ for new brake pads for 2 tires and they machine the rotors and drums (Those are the things that hold the brake pads in place) But I've paid up to $240 for a pair of brakes (waited to long and ruined my rotors and drums)

you needed more fluid because your brakes are wore down. when you replace them they will need to take some fluid out to get back to normal level.
