Jimmy Carter was elected to President in 1976 because of the severe backlash of the Nixon administration. Pres Ford was toast when he pardoned Nixon.
Then there was Pres Clinton who was elected on less than 50% of the vote. He won because of the backlash against Pres Bush for his no new taxes pledge, among other reasons. Ross Perot was a conservative and Republican protest vote.
Then we have the midterm elections of 2006. Conservatives voted out Republicans who spent too much and stopped acting like Republicans. Democrats who took Republican seats in most areas took the seats by running as blue dog or conservative Democrats. There were a few exceptions to this, but enough seats were lost because of this that it cost the Republicans the House. It was so bad in OH that they voted out DeWine to allow in a far left Brown.
This sure shows me that American people know that the Democrats cannot effectively lead. Maybe, though not yet, the Republicans will get this.
