He is 10 months old and I want to get him out of this habit. If I put him down he will cry. What is the best way to get him to start playing by himself more? I love him very much but its hard to hold him all the time. I need my time to take care of the house and cook.

Take care of the house and cooking while he is napping.

Is he crawling yet? Walking?

Put a sheet down on the floor. Put toys just out of his reach and encourage him to get them. Cheer and clap.

or, while you're cooking, give him tupperwear containers and a wooden spoon. Or Pots and pans.

He'll have sooo much fun!

Babies up until 12 months have an instinctual need to be with their mother constantly. A baby who has been nurtured & held alot since birth knows no different. This habit is hard to break but you can do it to some extent if you let him cry & provide him with some entertainment like wooden spoons, plastic containers, toys etc. While you are in the kitchen put on some music & sing & dance around him while you are doing your chores & you will probably keep him somewhat entertained. I don't think there is a baby on earth who can entertain himself for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. Perhaps you could work something out with your partner whereby he takes the baby for a few hours a couple of times a week & you could cook & freeze & get some chores done. Otherwise you can attack your chores after your baby is asleep at night. This stage will end soon enough - wait til his walking!!!!! ahhhhhhhh.

Put him in a play yard with toys that he can play with and go about your cleaning, Tell him that in 5 min you will pick him up. Then in 5 min pick him up. Even though he cant tell time and he does not know what 5 min are he will start to notice a pattern after you do it a couple times a day for a couple weeks. It not going to be easy ignoring his cries, but he needs to learn, and when he gets comfertable with the 5 min, make it 6

Good Luck

My daughter used to do that. Then she learned how to walk and got curious about everything else. Now she fusses when I have to hold her because she wants to get down, walk around, explore. It is just a stage of separation anxiety that babies go through, have patience and it will pass.

My daughter did the same thing for the longest time! Everyone told me to just let her cry and she would stop, well I tried that once and she cried so long and so hard that she made herself sick!!! I think it just eventually wears off as they get older. Good Luck and remain patient!!!

Try putting him on the floor where he can see you. Talk to him & pick him up occassoinally. Make it longer everytime he is down. He will not do this forever, that much you can be assured of.

Try little steps. Try doing house work with him in a sling/carrier, then progress to sitting him in a high chair so he can watch you work, move in and out of the room while gradually spending more time out of his sight. Oops...may not want to leave the room with him in the high chair. Good luck.
