a hedgehog, even though they can be a bit pointy....when they warm up to you they are really cute. Or you could get a those little nocturnal furry animals that resemble a chipmunk....oh sugargliders that's what they are. Those are really cute, they only bite if you are mean to them.

This kind of worries me....all small furry cute little animals need somewhere to live and usually do have a smell. If you are planning on having one that you dont want a lot of interaction with then I wouldnt plan on getting a pet.
Also smell totally depends on how clean the cage is. I have a guinea pig, a turtle in a 40 gallon tank, a dog, and 2 doves, and unless you knew it or heard them you would never smell them because animals should be kept in the same condition of cleanliness you would want to live in. Bottom line, if you cant dedicate time and love to an animal that does sometimes have a smell, pets may not be for you. Maybe get a plant instead.

A lot of people are being jerks. If you don't want to help someone, don't answer the question.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a low maintenance pet. At least this person is smart enough to know their lifestyle does not fit a high maintenance pet and is not getting one only to neglect it.

With few exceptions, such as horses and livestock, all animals are easy to care for if you are doing it correctly. And if you keep your animals and their cages clean then there is no smell.

Of the fish, Bettas are great. Their bowls are easy to clean and feeding is once a day. They do not need to be walked or let out like other animals.

Rats require attention, but are not hard to care for. They do not a lot of supervised activity, but once again their cages are easy to clean and with proper cleaning will not smell much if at all. I know mine does not smell at all.

If you want a step down, think hamster or fish or step up, perhaps a rabbit. However, they do require a little more attention and their cages will need to be cleaned more frequently to reduce odors.

Turtles are easy to care for if you have a tank with a great filter. It needs minimal cleaning.

A rat. Rat's are intelligent. You can train them, they learn their names, they are affectionate, they are funny little pranksters, they will cuddle and sleep on your lap. My kids had pet rats when they were growing and they are a true undervalued pet.

We had one pet rat that my kids named Pookie. She had so much personality. When they got home from school they'd let her out of the cage. She'd play with the kids for a while and then she'd wander off and snoop around. She'd usually end up in the dirty clothes because she loved to hide in big piles of clothes. But whenever you'd call her name she'd come running. Hopping across the carpet at full speed. If you placed her on a counter or something. She'd jump onto your shoulder. All the rats were endearing, but she was the one that my kids were the closest too.

One suggestion--If you do decide this is the pet for you, get two, unless you plan to spend a lot of time with it because they are very social and get depressed without a lot of interaction. They do way better and are happier if they have a cage buddy.

all animals are going to smell... I work at a pet store I should know. If you want something that doesn't have much of an odor and is cute a guinea pig is great. At Petsmart they are 29.99 plus a starter kit cage is 30 dollars. It includes bedding, food and a waterbottle. They are pretty simple to take care of all you need to remember is clean the cage once a week and give them vitamin c drops in their water. They make cute little noises and don't smell too bad.

I recommend a bird. The budgies are affordable and enjoy playing with toys, can learn to talk. Look for a blue cere, or nose area, this means it's a boy. Most birds you can't tell but you can with a budgie/parakeet.

I have a green cheek and a cockatiel. These birds are a riot. They love to sit on my shoulder, climb ropes, play with toys. But if you leave them in a cage daily, they may start to not want to be hand held.

If a hand held bird is not what you want, get two keets or just some finches. There are lots of exotic birds but they all want attention, as far as parrots.

Well, if you aren't afraid of snakes, I would say a ball python. I think mine is cute. You only have to feed them once or twice a month, and clean the cage about the same amount. VERY low maintenance, and I have never had a problem with mine as far as smells go .

Sounds like you don't need a pet.... get a bird cage and put a fake parrot in it.

They are very little work unless you are allergic to dusting once a week.
