I've heard many horror story's about being in labour for days and days but honestly they are rubbish.

You can be in labour for quite a while without even noticing it - it depends on your pain threshold really.

The doctors will let your labour continue until either you get too exhausted or the baby becomes distressed. I was in labour with my first about 17hrs from onset to finish(last 4 hrs painful) my second 6hrs (45 mins painful) it all depends really...

LOL @ biker bear. It will take as long as it takes. The first stages of labour can go on for some time. Once you are fully dilated, but getting nowhere so to speak, the doctors step in and help. Different hospitals will work differently, so ask for this information at anti-natal clinic.

I was six hrs with my first four and twenty two with my fifth. My last child was the biggest, 9lb 1 oz, hence the problem. She was the only ventouse delivery. One was upside down, feet first not bum first, he was the easiest, but they did help pull him out!

I don't know the record, but my first labour was 36 loooong hours!
Luckily, my second labour was 13 hours, what an improvement :)
Your first labour is almost always the longest, usually averaging 24 hours.

It can be a very long time! I was in labor for 39 hours! and that was with them finally giving me pitocin to hurry things up...if they hadn't given me the pitocin it might have gone on to the next day! The longest I've heard of someone being in labor is 45 hours, but I'm sure some women might even go past that.

As long as it takes im afraid, my first was around 25 hours and was horrible being my first i just wanted to get it over with but the second time my waters broke 24 hours before labour stared and then it lasted 6hours and was straight forward, i went to hospital 20Min's later all done and dusted, so no one can ever really tell just how long is going to me.

I was in slow labour for 2 days and active labour (being 4cm dilated onwards and finally being admited to hospital for decent pin relieving drugs!) for 18 hours and 21 minutes!

there are different thresholds of pain whilst in labour so you could have contractions for a while but i think once they become intense the nurses/Dr's only allow a certain time before a Cesarean
my first was 14 hours and 2nd 5 hours

Well depends if you mean in Labour from pushing or from contractions.
With my first I was having contrations for 28hours. And was pushing for 20minutes. If you areon about from pushing.Don't worry they won't let you try pushing for to long. Because the baby will be getting stressed.
You could have contrations quite early on.
Try this web page http://www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/labourandbirth/labour/stagesofchildbirth/

its got all the stages of labour.
Good luck

i know people who were in labour for days-my sister in law gave birth within 3 hours.
when you are admitted your midwife will examine you and after a couple of those will be able to tell you what might be your estimate time-if you aren't opening at all and are in pain i recommend go for an epidural at least you can sleep whilst the baby decides to make its way down.
good luck have a snap delivery
