I recently got my results back. I received a 74 in Critical Reading, a 70 in Mathematics, and a 66 in Writing Skills, for a total of 210.
My guidance department did a poor job in explaining the results, so I'd appreciate the help. Thanks!

Congratulations! You've done well. National Merit is based on your state's scores. Your 210 is a good score, (max is 240) but making Naitonal Merit will depend on how every junior in Illinois did. And you won't find out until next September.

National Merit does offer some scholarships, but you will be a good contender for other scholarships if you can score this well on the SAT. I suggest you get registered now for the next SAT you can take, and perhaps take the SAT II in May or June in subjects that you are currently studying. If you can score this well on the SAT it will bolster your scholarship applications, as well as help you get into highly selective colleges. There aren't too many scholarships or colleges that ask about PSAT scores, so don't try to "rest on your laurels" with it! :-)

As for understanding your PSAT results, the score report is very comprehensive. Take a look at your percentages - you're off the chart! On the lower left hand corner of the page are some suggestions for improving your SAT, and on the lower right hand corner is a terrific website and a password that will help you even more.

Best wishes! Good job!

Congrats! That's great!
It depends on your state. For instance, I think in Wyoming you only need a 204 or something, but if you're an international student the cutoff is something ridiculous like 224. My year in Washington it was 216. Did any of the seniors at your high school make National Merit this year? If so, ask them what the cutoff was last year - it's probably within a point or two of that.
No matter what, though, you're at least a National Merit Commended Scholar now, so great job!

Those are really fantastic scores, and you should be proud. I am pretty sure you need to look at your percent tile, it should say on your score report. And if you are in the 99 percent tile you will definately be considered!! I bet you are.

And also you said you had 210, and to find out what you would have done if it was the real SAT, you simply add another zero. Which would mean your score is 2100!! That is really good for an SAT score. Hope this somewhat helps you smarty pants. :)

Actually, it depends on which state you live in. Each state takes the top scorers on the PSATs and submit them, so if your state has a larger number of students who take the PSATs and do well, you will have to have a better grade than if you live in a state where fewer students take the test.

ask around your upperclassmen - they should know the score that usually is the "magic number" for the national merit thing. i asked around and got that for ca it's usually around 217, so i think you may be around the border, depending on how ppl in il do.

You have a GREAT chance of winning, good job! This means you got a 2,100 out of 2,400. The average is 1,500 and above average is 1,900 or above.
