It means that the white cell moves every part of itself around the bacterium until the bacterium is completely inside the white cell. Then the white cell goes to work on the bacterium until no more is left/ The "engulf" is usually more used to describe the action of macrophages on bacteria and other foreign bodies.

What I see as I've read your story is that you assume a lot about her. She said she felt lonely - why would she feel lonely when you're there 24/7? Could it be that you're not loving her in the way she needs but in the way you think she does? Take a few days, think about how you've loved her. Call her and tell her that you want to take a few days to think. I had a gf that I did a lot for and spent time with but she felt the same way. In the end she needed more of a physical and emotional connection - I don't mean sex; I mean holding her and not saying anything.

Engulf means to surround completely.
So the bacteria would be completely surrounded, all sides, top and bottom.

To overcome, overwhelm or swamp. In your case the bacteria has been swamped by the white blood cells.

In colloquial terms. The pretty girl with the large breasts was engulfed with invitations to the disco by the boys at her school.
