So my computer did a virus scan and it showed this thing for adware, so I went onto the website for instructions on how to remove it. The main thing was to go into the downloaded programs file and delete it, or delete it from the add/remove programs thing.

The problem is, upon checking all the listed methods to get rid of it, and even using the search program to find it, nothing comes up! Maybe I deleted it a while ago, but even in that case, it shouldn't come up with the virus scan. I'm confused.

Adware is very complex; there can be hundreds of different programs and files installed on a computer. Often, one program can catch some, and not others. Usually, anti-virus software can catch and remove some, but not most adware. You need a separate program for this.

You must be cautious--some programs promote themselves as being anti-spyware anti-adware programs, but they actually install these evil programs themselves!

I have found that the most reliable program (but it doesn't catch everything) is Ad-Aware by Lavasoft. If you haven't used it already, you can try installing and running it, with the link I've given in the "sources" part. I would recommend against installing other programs unless you can get a trusted source to tell you that they're ok.

Microsoft also makes an anti-sypware too. I've heard decent things about it, although I'm inclined not to trust anything that Microsoft does, so you could also look into that too.

Good luck.

There's a fine line between viruses and adware these days, so don't feel bad that you're confused!

Go to housecall.trendmicro.com and select 'scan your PC'. It will proceed to examine and clean your system.
For a more permanent, home-based solution, go to download.com and look for Spybot or Ad-Aware. Download, install, run.
