My sister is 37 weeks pregnant with her 4th child. She's got an irritable uterus and has been having contractions for a month now. She's only 1cm dialated and just miserable. I use to work at a Day Spa and remembered talking to the Massage Therapist about the pressure points in the feet that make you go into labor when I was pregnant. Does anyone know anything about this? Are there any Massage Therapist out there? Or does anyone have any other Suggestions?

Accupressure may be helpful in inducing labor. Some pressure points you can try are the roof of your mouth, the webbing of your fingers between your pointer finger and thumb, and above the ankle about four fingerspaces above is a pressure point.
placing your left hand on your right leg with your pinkie finger just above the interior ankle bone, the lateral tibia is located just under where your index finger lies. You may utilize both points simultaneously by placing a thumb on each point as shown.

There are pressure points on the hand that are said to induce labor, but are you sure that's a good idea? What does her doc say? There could be developemental reasons why he doesn't want to induce. Assuming that he gives you permission to do this, the inner part of the thumb, the web between it and the next finger, is the water spot. Massaging this area should help. Good luck, I've been there too.

The pressure point is about 3 finger widths above your ankle bone, on the inside of your leg. Feel around, pressing firmly with your thumb. The spot will be tender on anyone, pregnant or not.

That being said, your sister should check with her doctor or midwife before trying to induce labor. Being 37 weeks pregnant sucks, and it's hard to wait. But the complications that inducing without medical supervision could cause are not worth it.

BTW, red raspberry leaf tea does not induce labor, it just tones the uterus.

I'm a massage therapist, and we shy away from the ankles of pregnant women. No one is sure whether it is something that always happens, but we are careful. It may cause uterine contractions, and is thought to sometimes cause preterm births. There isn't any real evidence.
Try it though, rub circles around the boney prominences of her ankles and just an inch or two above on the inside of her leg, it may work and might not.

Poor thing, I am 35 weeks and 3 days and I feel the same way - they say that it is safe to take red raspberry leaf tea and supposedly this helps start contractions - you could even look it up online and it says that this is the purpose and that is does not harm the baby. Spicy food is also suppose to help.

First of quit blaming the baby. That's not why she's miserable.

Secondly, I do happen to have my ex-wife's Massage book available from school if you want a picture os something.
