You may not have realized this, but human mothers are quite similar to animal mothers. And some have that motherly instinct and some don't. I don't know why everyones saying humans don't have that instinct, they do. And the percentage of bad animal mothers is the same as bad human mothers.

Because animal behavior is pretty much instinct. Humans have instinct as well, but it takes a lot longer to become human rather than animal. You'd be surprised by some of the unkind things animals do to their young anyway.

For many animals the "directions" on how to care for their young is written in the mother's "maternal instinct".

When we have first time mother dogs in our shelter, it sometimes takes a couple of hours for their instinct to "kick in"; and at first they are overwhelmed by their pups.

Some animals, however, have to watch other adult females of their species to learn how to be good moms. Jane Goodall found this to be true of chimps.

I find it amazing that they do. A stray dog I took in last month just had puppies and she is less than a year old but knows exactly what to do. It is fascinating to watch and contemplate.

I suppose its just instinct but isn't instinct fascinating? Why don't people have such wonderful instincts?

They are not exactly stupid, but I'm going to say animals have evolved to have the instincts and know how to care for their offspring, too bad all humans don't have that ability

I suppose they have strong instincts that humans lack.
Other examples of this is how birds all know where to fly south for winter, and how salmon can find the place they were born so they can go there and breed also.
