Are you using liquid eyeliner and a slow, steady hand? Think of putting on make up as an 'art.' Fast and rushed just doesn't cut it, unless you're muy talented (which I don't think someone experimenting with make up is, yet). Maybe it just doesn't look right because of the shape of your eyes? I know that's the case with mine. I would research that on covergirl.com (I believe they have a section dedicated to "What look is right for you" or something). Good luck!

P.S. If you are referring to the "perfect" make up look in magazines, be media savvy-- most of those pictures are airbrushed and photoshopped to look flawless.

Heres what I do; first I use the smoth all the way around mascara brush. Then I use the kind thats all prickly to spread out the mascara. Don't put mascara on the bottom, then vice versa- don't put eyeliner on the top. If you have blue, green or other light colored eyes you want use black. If you have dark eyes you want to use medium colors like brown and grey. Hope that helps!!

to have the "perfect" make-up look you have to look natural.
eyes:
use browns and pinks(works for all types of skin). get the eyeshadow with 3 or 4 colors in that thingy. take the medium color and put it on the lower part of your lid, then take the darkest color and make a small triangle from the tom of your eyelashes to the crease in the middle of your eyelid. then take the lightest color and put it on the top of your eyelid.
cheeks:
use dark pinks (works for light colored skins, light pinks for tan). put the blush from the cheek to the ear.
lips:
use light pinks or a shiney clear color. i think lipstick looks too heavy.
foundation:
find a color closest to your own skin color and cover-up the dark circles under your eyes if you have any or red marks or anything else like that.
mascara:
put one or two layers of mascara on and with an eyebrow comb comb out the access so it wont look chunky and so the lashes wont stick together

You need to take your time to do it. Liquid eyeliner is especially tricky. Before you put on either eyeliner or mascara be sure to curl your lashes and put on any eyeshadow first. NEVER pump the brush for mascara or liquid eyeliner because it'll dry the product out quicker; just move the brush around the inside of the tube when you need more.

For eyeliner (both liquid and pencil):
*Use you least steady hand first. {You'll see why later}(ie: if you are right-handed then your least steady hand is left)

*Pretend that you're looking down. This will make your eyelids lower.

*Then use the index finger of your steady hand to make your eyes slant closed.

*Then, using the least steady hand, carefully and slowly draw a line right on top of your lash line. Repeat steps for other eye.

{The reason I said use your least steady hand is because when you go over to use your most steady hand, it'll be easier to copy and get the thickness of the line to match the other eye}

As for mascara:
*Get an eyelash comb and comb through your eyelashes first to separate them as much as possible.

*Place the wand on the base of your lashes and wiggle your mascara wand before combing it through your lashes. This (Thanks Tyra Banks for the tip!!) will kinda make you look like you're wearing liner and will help you get the most out of your mascara too.

*Depending on the brand of mascara, it'll say to either wait for them to dry or to get them as high as you want before they dry. Look on the tube/box of your fav mascara for details. Repeat these steps for the other eye.

I'll sometimes blink and get mascara under my eye. Just dab on a little foundation to "erase" the marks.

If all else fails, go to your local Penney's or Macy's and ask for help in the makeup department. I hope this helps you out!
