I only take minimal footwear along when it's freezing, just in case I get stranded somewhere. When temperatures are above freezing I haven't taken footwear along -on my feet or in a bag- for ten years. It's NOT illegal, it's NOT unhealthy and as soon as you've built up a tough layer of callouses & don't shuffle your feet, glass isn't a threat either. Passersby often comment and ask if I'm not cold or if walking the pavement doesn't hurt -I rarely get comments of 'gross' here... but I live in Europe and we don't have this myth that it's illegal overhere. So while it is rare -I've only seen other people barefoot in public three times or so in all those years- I rarely run into any real confrontations with store managers or the like. If it weren't for that stupid myth barefooters in the US would also have it much easier!

Yes, I do it all the time in the summer. Completely barefoot no socks no shoes. The only two places I go like that are to my neighbor down the street and to take a ride in the car somewhere, where I am not getting out. Yes I like it. I don't care what people passing by think, if they have a reaction, I never noticed or paid attention.

Yes, I have. It was many years ago, I must have been around 10 or so. It was for a good several hours but I don’t recall the reaction I had from other people; I wasn’t exactly at an age where that detail affected me that much. I do remember enjoying it, though. I enjoyed walking on the pavement and walking through the grass barefoot, it just felt good and pleasantly different. I should give it a try again sometime. That’s probably one of many hippie-like behaviors I picked up from my parents who grew up in the sixties; Dad himself was a major hippie.

I spent a lot of my youth in the south - in a beach town. I went around barefoot a lot. I would go over to friends' homes - or even to the store. If I had nowhere to go where shoes were required - I wouldn't bother to put them on for hours. It was illegal to DRIVE barefoot - so I always kept some flip flops in the car in case I got pulled over. Sometimes the pavement would be too hot and would blister the bottom of my feet. Also - there were these horrible things that grew in parts of the grass here and there called sticker burs - and they would stick in your bare feet something horrid. So - I stopped doing it. But I loved doing it as a child (and my Mom didn't let me do it very often) - so as a very young adult I took advantage of the liberty.

One time I took my pumps off in New York City (they were rubbing blisters) and walked through the city streets barefoot(Greenwich Village - a bunch of us were going to the theatre). A homeless woman saw me and said "Put your shoes on Honey. You'll get worms!" We've always joked and laughed about it ever since!

Most people consider walking around barefoot to be pretty dirty and nasty. Be prepared to defend what you love doing.

I've gone out to the car in the driveway, and across the lawn for a few minutes, but I hate being barefoot. My wife on the other hand loves it. She goes barefoot on any occeasion she thinks she can get away with it.

I go barefoot a lot, in the summertime when I am working in my gardens, walking down the way to talk to a neighbor, etc...
I once spent days with out shoes on when I was at A Rainbow Family gathering... but I am a hippie so it's kinda natural for me :o)

I never wear shoes in the summer. One time when I was a about ten or eleven I went to the grocery store with my mom, but I got into the car w/o shoes on. I had to sit in the shopping cart the whole time in the store b/c she wouldn't leave me in the car, and she wouldn't let me walk around barefoot.

Another time I did the same thing, I just climbed into the car without any shoes, when we went to visit family out of state for the weekend. My entire family thought I was a complete idiot and couldn't understand how I just forgot to wear shoes, but I thought it was fun.

i went to the store as a child like that.....that was when i was hanging out with some redneck kids, so they inspired me. We went to the drug store, but quickly were kicked out by some old lady that worked there. I think we spent the whole day barefoot. I tried it as a preteen once when I saw a Olympic runner who ran barefoot, but did not like it anymore.

Never! Nor do my children and husband. This is my prefernece though. People can do whatever they want actually. But the reason that I do not do it is because I live in a decent sized city and there are tons of concrete. Well, people spit, urinate, toss things on the ground with who knows what, vomit and other things and not to mention accidently stepping on glass. I just don't want to take that chance
