I look through old diarys, magazines and stuff to find short cute scenes that can go into my story. Like if my character is not very graceful I will look through embarrising moments in magazines and see if anything is good in there. I also add a little bit of me into each of my characters. Like one of my characters will have my interest in music. One will be extremely sensitive, etc.
Also listen to people around you, if you want to write a comedy go to your school and listen to what ppl say. If they say something funny write it down and keep a list of scenes, quotes etc. from people.
Hope that helps.

Thats like baking a cake and then deciding upon the ingredients. Try to imagine the story as a whole before you flesh out the details. If you have a vision and story outline then the details will take care of themselves.
What I mean by that is don't just start with your narrative, do some more plot structure planning and try to imagine the characters as real people. Get to know your characters and then get 'into character' like an actor would. See the world through their eyes and do the things that they would do and the possibilities are endless. Doing some role-play activities could help.

I'd suggest if your stuck on ideas to think about characters. If you already have characters you like, you can use those. Just ask yourself what would they do? What are they like in different situations.... if someone rear ended them, if they picked a fight with a fat guy at the supermarket, if they wanted to get into college... eventually you'll find something that fits your character and sparks your interest, and that's a good indication of what you should write about.
P.S. never write about what you know. It's not about you. (assuming your writing fiction) It's about your characters. Don't worry about details- just generate ideas. Write about what you can imagine. The sky is the limit. In writing you should have freedom from your thoughts, experiences and actions. Theres a time and place to write about them, but this isn't it. Step into your character's shoes.

Make it a science fiction about aliens that try to take over the earth. The main character should have a fleeting love affair with an attractive young woman, then go insane when she is killed by the alien overlord...

Oh the perfect story has to have a combination of fantasy, sorrow, adventure and maybe a death if you want to but i fully suggest it and if you want u can also have a love like um, the main character loves someone but can never be with them or show their feelings. Maybe a war too

Why not write a mystery, then you can incorporate all those aspects into it as you like. Your mystery should be based on something you actually know something about - a special place, culture, religious practice perhaps or group of people.
