Here is one persons question about it and others seem to agree.
I copied and pasted it, although I have no real idea the meaning even after reading it. You can go to the website and read more if you wish.

What does the term "prototypical" really mean?

First, what characteristics are necessary for railroad equipment to be "prototypical"?

Does the term "prototypical" have a temporal component? For example, if a set of ABA's are painted in different paint schemes so that the corporate executives can select one paint scheme, and the equipment is operated for a short period of time in each livery, is each paint scheme then considered to be "prototypical"? What if a tourist road repaints a set of ABA's for the tourist railroad, is that new paint scheme also "prototypical"?

What if a railroad adds and deletes certain accessories or other equipment from an engine, or piece of rolling stock, is each version "prototypical'? Or, is equipment "prototypical" only as it appears on the day of the original "builder's photo", or the date of delivery?

Does the railroad have to be of a specific class of railroad for equipment or a paint scheme to be prototypical? Or is it just sufficient if some piece of equipment operated in some fashion on a railroad for any length of time?

Is there a specific reference to an agreed upon definition for the term "prototypical"? How do you generally use the term?

I think of equipment as being "prototypical" if it ever operated on a rail line for any amount of time and for any reason -- but that may not be the correct interpretation!

I agree with your definition of prototypical.

Definition of Prototypical - Slang, Derogatory, Foul - as it pertains to 3 rail trains(or in this case 2 rails) - Anything that runs on tinplate rails.
