can I copy a dvd using just my dvd player and my dvd r? If so how do I connect it so it will work?

You can only copy unprotected DVDs; that is, those you or someone else made. It is illegal to copy commercial DVDs.

For DVDs with no copy protection, connect video out and audio out on DVD player to video and audio in on DVDR.
Click play on DVD, Click Record on DVDR
