A cpu means a processor not a pc

Quad cores are really overkill for gaming right now, the games can only use one core. Get the Core 2 Extreme dual core, it has a faster clock speed than the quad core, which is more important for gaming than having those extra unused cores.

Very few games can make use of multiple cpus or cores. A quad core for gaming would break your budget and not give you the performance you're expecting. Better to go with a single or dual-core machine and put the money in ram and the video card instead.

Will you be building your own? If so, get the X6800 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115001.
Do NOT get Intel's or AMD's new quad-cores. With the exception of rendering, the quad-cores perform worse than the X6800.

Instead of building one

you can choose one from Alienware or Cyberpowerpc or wait for couple of weeks for Dell's XPS 710 if you have a total budget around 5500$

I'd say a Dell Inspiron, it has good quality sound and good memory for lots of games.
