Tell them you need one for emergency; A cell phone is especially usefull if you walk home alone from school.

Ask them to get the cheapest plan (with a free phone) and promise you will pay for any calls beyond your monthly plan from your allowance.

I don't know how old you are but consider this ...
one child in our family was 12 and had a cell phone, the way he treated it reminded me of why guidelines need to be set and strictly adhered to

1. He's lost and misplaced the phone (by the way I've found a few phones out shopping during the holidays myself)

2. He's disabled the phones playing with it, trying to "do things"

3. He had a calling card ... which constantly needed replacing because he and his sister would "download" any stupid thing they found ... she often swiped his phone because he'd leave it lying about the house.

4. He's broken the phone by dropping it, stepping on it etc

5. When borrowing a friends phone you call your mom ... if you had your own phone you'd also be calling friends ... our kid was fond of saying the card is only 10.00 whats the big deal ... try to earn that money to pay for it and you'll know what the big deal is

I don't think after so many incidents he should have had the phone ... but he's not my child and I'd make him pay the price for every incident ... You may be responsible, but perhaps you're not and that is why your parents hesitate. You can make a deal but most kids seem to make a deal to get what they want and forget any deals after. So my suggestion would be to make sure you're responsible enough to carry the phone before convincing them you need the phone.

I'm an older person, and even though I don't have kids, if I had one, especially a daughter, the only way I'd do it is if it had limited minutes, maybe prepaid. THEN she would have to contact me at certain times of the day, or be available when I tried to call her so that I could make sure she was okay. I think your parents are just looking out for you, and perhaps they can't afford another phone right now. However, I do think that if they make enough money, they could possibly get you a phone with limitied prepaid minutes, even on a Razr I think. But you gotta let them know you're ready to abide by certain rules. If not, they won't think it's worth the trouble getting you something, then having to set new rules for you.

First, it depends on how old you are and what you are doing. I got a phone in 7th grade because I have such a busy schedule and go places all the time (friends house, mall, movies, parties) I convinced my parents to get me a phone because I used several examples. Like say there was a miscommunication, my reply would be ---it would have been a lot easier if I had a phone.
But the key is not to whine and be flexible with the type of phone that you get. Dont be picky w/ your first phone, give your parents a chance to warm up to the idea of you having a phone.

Good Luck!

Show them that you are old enough by doing things like this: research the phone options so that you know exactly what it will cost for you to have a phone, up front and each month; find out what company your parents use, and see if that company has free family or in network calls (free family means calls to your parents don't count as minutes, they are just always free; in network calls means the same is true for calls to your friends who have the same cell phone company as your family - but not all companies offert his feature); offer to pay for your share of the bill each month with your own money; try to think of some chore that your parents expect you to do but you always forget to do it - start doing it consistently, and then if you are successful, point that out to them.

i know what you are talking about. tell them
1. it will help you with learning responsibility(taking care of phone)
2. if you really want to, tell them you will pay for the plan
3. if you get lost you would need a phone
4. basically if anything happens to you, a phone is a great plus(saftey reasons)
5. remind them of the inconvenience of borrowing their phones
6. cell phones are really cheap right now, u can get razrs for 20 bucks(dont know if deal is still avalible),but there are plenty of free cell phones out there, just ask the provider
