Why should people be in ranks? Why cant everyone get along and work for the benefit of everyone else?

Simply because we are capitalist pigs ... and demand incentive to work and because the majority of this world runs on greed and a self-serving need to be better and have more than the other guy. It goes right along with the saying "why can't we all just get along."

In theory, Marxism should work perfectly, just like every single other political structure "should" work perfectly. Where Marxism fails each and every time, is in it's constant tendency to completely ignore the all-around nature of a human being. If everyone is a sheep, eventually, some power hungry psyco will inevitably begin to usurp. Maybe they begin to organize things and then start abusing their power. It's just the nature of some people to do that and throughout history, not just the USSR, but with Hitler, North Korea, you name it, that the communist/Marxist system is too frail and too idealistic to actually work. It assumes people will be exactly the same all the time. It has been proven that on a much smaller scale, Marxism/communism works (hippie communes, etc). There, there's much less room for all the drama that people in a much larger community have to face and the people who are living like that choose to live that way. On a different note, if you're still wondering why things aren't free, try growing your own crops and making your own tools/home/transportation and you'll see

Because there are certain people in this world that want to be above everyone else; they feel a need to be better.

Although it would be a perfect world, how would it work? WHY should those people work for the benefit of others if they aren't getting anything in return? To some people, there just isn't a point to it.

if everything was free, and people were all equal in ranks, life would be perfect for us all. however, perfect lifes are really boring. something not perfect is like exciting. so consider it that everyone on this planet has an exciting life.

Check out two things:
www.freecycle.org, where everything is free, and
rent (or borrow or get a copy on freecycle) the movie King of Hearts, with a few wonderful scenes about a group of people who make everything free!

Because its human nature. Some people are lazy and some people are not. It those that are not that have the problem with working for the lazy. this is why communism fails.

There is this great saying I once picked up. I don't know who said it.

The system is always perfect. It is the human element that always ruins everything.
