What type of jewelry is he wearing? Many women find a curved barbell more comfortable than a ring, especially if its a large diameter, small guage ring. If it is bothering you, have him see his piercist and switch to a curved barbell. Or, you may have to abstain until it is a bit more healed to change jewelry.
Depending on how recently it was pierced, he probably shouldn't be having sex, even with a condom, as the activity can irritate the piercing and prolong the healing process.

Yes, by all means tell him to take it out and see a real doctor if it doesn't get better soon. Infection is highly likely and this is a problem for men who choose this type of piercing.
Piercing is inflicting a wound on/in your body and it should be treated as such.

Well, I hate to sound like a douche...did he really think that he was going to be able to damage such a sensitive part of his body and not have pain? Have him take tylenol or motrin every 6 hours and ice it (i know, cold and male parts dont work well together) 15 minutes on and 20 off.
