Seriously, it's a stereotype that emo kids cut themselves. Now, for those that do:
Some of them do it for credibility as emo/goth/whatever, but some of them actually do it as an attempt to deal with their pain. I've heard everything from "It lets me know this is REAL" to "It's like a silent scream for help". If you could find that episode, "Cutters" from the TV show Secret Lives of Women, it will show you several reasons why people do that; also that not just stereotypical emo/goth kids do it.

I think for some they feel sorry for themselves, and like that one person said, some people handle pain different ways. Emo stands for emotional, and so usual the more emotional ones are more likely to do it. And you don't always have to be emo to cut yourself. It's just a steryotype that if your emo, you cut. I think alot of times this happens during the teenage years, and once they realize that they can't hide their scars any longer, they quit.

They cut themselves because they want to feel a different pain besides emotional. It takes the edge off the crying from depression. It's kinda like a big release/relief when they do it.

1. It temporarily makes them feel better (like alcohol for alcoholics)
2. Want to be noticed by someone for how they've hurt them but doesn't know how to show it.
3. When they cut themselves they possibly believe that the person who emotionally hurt them, knows they cut themselves so that it would hurt that person too. Possibly do it on purpose.

That is just a stereotype. There are emo kids that cut themselves, but most don't. There non-emos that cut themselves too.

they have come to hate themselves for whatever reason. they are fearful and terrified of abandonment. they grow up to be adults with borderline personality disorder and never trust anybody. if they even live that long. they are well known for this cutting business.
