It varies from author to author. Most of us have a residence and a place to work in our home. A few have an office separate from the home. Some of us have children underfoot, but a large percentage of writers either have no children or the children are grown.

In the years that I played starving writer and relied only on my writing skills and the jobs I could create, I had a small house with a leaky roof and rarely saw real people. On the other hand, I wrote seven books and got them published. I only quit writing when I had to make more money. Having no other family members to support me, I had no choice.

The best move you can make is to get a good job or have a good marriage and write part time until you have a book that's saleable. Write the entire thing, revise it, and start submitting it. DO NOT quit your day job until you have the contract signed and know exactly what kind of advertising budget you'll get. If the publisher doesn't give you an advertising budget (most common), work the publicity around your day job. You'lll need to have several books published before you can write full time.

That's my experiences talking.

I write all the time. I write in my head first, and then I put it into the computer.

Doesn't matter as long as you have the inspiration to write you will.

Where ever you feel most like writing; most honest with yourself.
