Often in the past Nintendo launched different (aka incompatible) versions of their consoles between Europe, Japan and the U.S.
I'd like to buy a Nintendo Wii in the States, but I don't know if I will be able to play european games later.

no they run on different systems like different plugs and such

No, because European TVs run on the "PAL" standard (Phase Alternation by Line, I believe) whereas North American TVs run on the NTSC standard (not sure what that stands for). In other words, the displays are generated differently, thus meaning European Wii games won't display properly on US screens. Also, regional software lockouts would prevent playing European games on US Wiis and vice versa.
