What do you mean by saying DVD-recorder? If you mean the thing like CD-Rom; read the manual it should be all written there. Because there are differnt types of DVD-discs (different layers different types of burning information) If you mean the addition to the computer you will need a software to read the DVDs. If you mean DVD-recorder like VHS, yes it will read the DVD format but again it depends on the type of DVD you have and the Flash program of the recorder. Some recorders could be upgraded by downloading a special program and they will read something else...or just read better the old formats. But NOT ALL the recorders may be upgraded by this way.

It depends, usually a stand-alone DVD recorder that you have for a computer won't play the DVD, howevever most home DVD recorders do also play DVD's.
