Order of operation
an easy way to memorize it is...
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
P: Parenthesis
E: Exponents
M: Multiply
D: Divide
A: Add
S: Subtract
So you would do 2 times 3 first and get 6
then add 2 to the 6 and your final answer will be 8.

Heh, we were taught to do sums in BODMAS order: brackets, of, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction.
In this case, do the 2x3 first = 6
add 2 = 8
