Daylight saving time was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin to save the country millions of candles. It worked. People used far fewer candles after daylight savings time was enacted. Some of the other answers listed above will help you see why.

Because the number of hours we spend after sunset far exceeds the number of hours we spend before sunrise. If the sun rises at 5 am and sets at 7 pm (typical summer day), most people sleep right through sunrise, getting up at 6 or 7 or whatever. But there's 2-3 or more hours after sunset that people stay awake, using energy.

There's always the oddball who goes to bed at sunset and wakes up at 3 in the morning. But most people don't do that.

Daylight savings time was created so workers could enjoy more daylight time after work during the summer.

It doesn't matter as much in the winter because it's cold.

It has nothing to do with saving energy.

It's a trade-off. More people are active at night when it would get dark later than in the morning when it would get lighter later.
