Yes, it can go bad, although the concentration of sugar usually prevents stuff from growing (think of fruit preserves). Feet smell is usually fungus (like athletes foot) Without expecting to save what you have, pour the sugar out slowly and see if you can spot black stuff, like mold. After pouring all the sugar, inspect the inside of the container for rust and mold especially in the bottom corner and rim. If you suspect anything, fill it with hot water with a little detergent, scrub it down, add some bleach, then fill it again and finally rinse it and let it thoroughly dry. If you wish to try to save the sugar, if your location is not too humid, let it stand for a while to air out, then put it in a different container which you can cover and let it stand and see if it still smells. Then throw it out.

I have heard the only food that doesn't ever go bad is honey. I don't know if the sugar is bad or not, but I have had the same problem before after storing sugar in a plastic canister and I tossed it. I was afraid the cookies I was going to make would have that taste-yuck.

If sugar is kept in a clean dry container glass or tin or ceramic it will not go bad if it smells like feet then where you keep it and what you keep it in is not correct. If you keep it in a tin container be aware that tin can rust so keep an eye on for that any sighn of rust throw it out. Your sugar has picked up the smell of the container, or its surroundings. Keep in mind Sugar is a preservative so the sugar by it self will not go bad, stored properly. clean dry no plastic a lid and at room temp should give you no problems even if it is 10 years old

Eeeeww! I don't think sugar goes bad. It's probably the canister. Is it plastic? I remember when I was growing up, my mom kept her sugar in a Tupperware container and everytime I opened it, it smelled sooooo bad. But the sugar tasted just fine. Try using a ceramic or glass jar(if you aren't already), or just keeping it in it's original bag.

It doesn't go bad, but it can be just like any other food and take on the smells of other things around if it's not kept in an air tight container. This is why people keep baking soda in the fridge. I would dump it out and start fresh because even if it's not bad, it will still throw off the taste of what you're using it in.
