With a surprising amount of attention to detail - there can be upwards of thirty pieces in a bra that has to work for its living. A few years ago BBC Television did a series where they gave a couple of industrial designers various everyday objects to redesign, and the bra was one of them and it was very funny to see these chaps trying to understand the various tasks that had to be accomplished - definition, separation, uplift, staying in place, not putting too much strain on the back or cutting into the shoulders ... and then they had to consider the enormous number of combinations of pieces required to achieve all the different size ranges. If you're really interested it's worth getting an old one and taking it slowly to pieces and reverse-engineering it, 'cos there's a surprising amount of skill involved (and pain when they get it wrong).
PS: when I was at school there was a girl whose parents weren't really happy at the thought of her growing up, and so wouldn't buy her a bra - she was discovered trying to knit herself one. Not to be advised. Itchy and ultimately useless.
