Ok, if you want simple --
A polynomial is a collection of terms with numbers and letters connected by plus's and minuses.
I can just see the other nerds here cringing at this, but I'm trying to keep it in terms that you can understand.
For example, 2x + 3, 5y^2 - 2y - 1, etc.
Ascending and descending refers to the exponents or powers that you see on the letters. Ascending means that the powers are going up; descending means that the powers are going down.
For example, x^3 + 4x^2 + x + 1 is descending because the powers go 3, 2, 1 (there's a power of 1 understood on the x in the second last term) Note that I"m talking abuot the powers, not the numbers in front of the letters, which are called coefficients.
On the other hand,
2 + x + 3x^2 + 2x^3 is ascending because the powers are going up. Again, never mind the coefficients, just look at the powers or exponents, that is, the number behind the ^ symbol. (We have to use the ^ symbol here because small numbers raised and lowered from the line, that is, superscripts and subscripts, are not availbe here.)
For more information on this or any math subject, put subject tutorial in your search window. You'll turn up lots of links explaining your subject. for example when I put polynomial tutorial in my search window I get lots of links, then I look at them and select one that looks like it would help someone at a basic level who needs to keep things simple.... Here we go....

There are lots more, but many of them are a bit more abstract, and use notation that's hard for a beginner to read. I picked these two because they looked good to get started with.

A polynomial is an expression containing a bunch of terms involving a variable.

For instance:

3x+2
3x^2 + 2x + 5
5x^5 + 6

Are all polynomials whereas:

5
5+3

Are not.

Ascending and descending polynomials deal with a second variable than x. It is y and is usually what the whole thing equates to.

y=3x+2

This is an ASCENDING polynomials because when x ascends (or gets really big) y gets really big as well. It's strictly ascending because when x gets really small, y gets really small. So the graph would show a line going UP (ascending) from left to right.

y= - x + 6

This is a DESCENDING polynomial. When x gets really big, y gets really small. The graph would show a line going DOWN from left to right.

y = 3x^2 + 4x + 5

This is neither strictly ascending or strictly descending. When x gets really big, y gets really big, but when x gets really small, y still gets really big (because the square of a negative is still positive). The graph would show a parabola, U-shaped, and no pattern throughout.

y=x^3 + 3x^2 + 4x + 5

This is an ascending polynomial. Since cubing something does nothing to the sign of the value, when x gets big y gets big and when x gets small y gets small. The graph would be a curving line going UP left to right.

y= -x^3 + 7x + 8

This is a descending polynomial for the same reason that y= -x was descending.

A polynomial is simply a sum of terms composed of x raised to a power times a constant (integer). An example would be x^2 + 3x +4.

In mathematics, a polynomial is an expression in which a finite number of constants and variables are combined using only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative whole number exponents (raising to a power).
ie in the expression: 2+4X+ X^2+7YX+6Z
