Hi everyone. I am a happy owner of Honda CR-V 1997. It used to give me around 28MPG on average. It suddenly went down to about 20MPG. What could be the reason? I know there could be a lot of factors but such a sudden drop? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Check your tire pressure and keep it as high as you can within the vehicle specification. Low tire pressure will increase the rolling resistance of the tires and lower mileage.

Check your air filter. If it's plugged up, change it.

If you haven't had a tune up lately, get one.
Hopefully it's something simple.
Good Luck

Wrong grade of gasoline.
Plugs are fouling.
Distributor cap is loose and causing weak firings.
Water in the gasoline.
Engine needs to be rebuilt because it is losing compression from worn rings.
You might have a head gasket about to blow. Look for water or antifreeze in the tailpipe if that is occurring slowly. You can wad up a piece of newspaper or papertowel and swab the inside of the tailpipe to check for it. The soot is normal, btw.
You might have loose sparkplug wires. They look connected, but aren't.
Fuel mixture is incorrect. Tune the carburetor time.
Air filter need changing.
Take off the emergency brake when driving. : p

A lot of states put alcohol in the gas during the winter. Doesn't get as good of MPG. Since it got cold have you checked the air pressure in your tires? When you run the defroster the A/C compressor will run. That can cut mileage too.

A few things could have done this, dirty clogged air filter, bad oxygen sensors will do it...... maybe its time for a tuneup.... also if the check engine light is on get your computer read by an OBD reader. I had a Blazer that got 9mpg.... I changed the oxygen sensors (3) of them, and my mileage went upto 16mpg.

You might need an oil change or a tune up. Talk to your local mechanic, or dealer. They might be able to point you in the right direction. You may even have a leak!

All the advice is good maybe a locking gas cap too. If they just take a gallom or two it will fool you into thinking bad mileage.
