I didn't up going to my best friend's wedding for some good reasons which I don't want to go into detail - he understood but I realize now that I could've gone if I had really figured some stuff out. His wedding is over now - I know he was disappointed but I feel like I want to apologize to him after the fact but I don't want him to feel worse.

There are many reasons for apologizing. Apologies can be the result of an intentional or unintentional act.

In this case, it sounds to me that although you did not have any malicious intent in not going to the wedding that you feel discomfort in knowing that you hurt a good friend.

As William James said...
"When you have to make a choice and don't make it, that in itself is a choice."

We all make mistakes--it's what makes us human. So don't even think twice about it. You feel like he was disappointed and hurt so apologize!

Why wouldn't you? Why would he feel worse if you express that you are sorry about missing his day and that maybe, had you tried harder, you could have made it?

I am sure he has considered that possibility. So isn't it worse to have him think it and you not say anything about it?

Just make sure that you give him a proper heartfelt apology. Include the following items.

* give a detailed account of what happened
* acknowledge the hurt and disappointment you caused him
* take responsibility...no ifs, ands, or buts
* recognize your role
* tell him how much you regret it
* ask to be forgiven and promise it won't happen again

Good Luck! I am sure things will work out.

Do something really nice with or for the two of them. Something to honor their marriage and show that you still want to be a best friend.
Apologize unless you think it would make things worse.

If you feel the need to, do it. If he is one of your best friends, he will understand. Sometimes we make poor decisions based on emotion. Fortunately, the people who care about us are forgiving.

Just do something nice to your friend and ask for forgiveness...just still be his friend.

It depends on circumstances. (why you didn't go!). If it's going to make him more upset, then let it go!
