Close, try comparing candles made from different materials and comparing soot, smoke, and burn time... I think you might have issues getting a project with fire approved by your parents and the school though. You need to be extremely careful.
Some examples of different types of candles:
-Beeswax
-Soy
-Wax
-That jelly stuff
-Lard

Asking which brand is a good specific question. This is good for a science project in the first year or two you do them. After your first couple of projects, you should begin to try to ask and answer "why" questions with your projects.
Asking which of white or black (say) beeswax candles burn faster I think this isn't quite as good a question since I think it would be very difficult to show the effect of color on speed. I suggest using the widest candles you can find if you decide to do this - with wide candles color might be important -with tapered candles, I'd guess not - but who knows.
I know different types of wax will change the burn time with the same wicks, but which is faster and which is slower? hmmm?
If you can do a project with fire (safety issues) then maybe you want to go a step further and make some candles to test with different amounts of color, oils and waxes to see what they do. There's probably a craft store close to you that sells stuff to make them.
two other things you might want to study with speed are hardness (how easy is it to scratch the candle) and melting point (what temperature does the wax begin to melt). Do softer candles burn faster? They certainly will melt faster, I think!

Ahhhh. The oracle knows all. Why don't you get candles of the same colour but different thickness. then generate an exponetial graph to their burning time for example 1 inch thick 2 cm per hour , 1.5 inch thich 1cm per hour, 2 inch thick 0.5cm per hour. then compare coloured to white ones in the same way. A+ for sure.

Everyone knows the colored ones run faster! That is a terrible question.

It depends on what grade your are in. If your comfortable with it, and can gather enough data to support your theory then go with it. It's a burning question.
