first of all you have to learn how to let go. second you have to get a grip on what is a need and what is a want. this is how i do it. i look at the object and if it takes me more then 3 seconds to decide it gets tossed. I have learned that i really do not need material things, they just take up room and become clutter. Yes there are certian things one whould keep for what ever reason. If you do not use them on a regular basis, put them in a place designated for those things. An important point is how you keep your house you might have to modify your living. Number one everything in your house should have its own place if it does not have its own place then it becomes clutter. Believe when i say if you can learn to let go of material objects you will feel like someone has taken that weight off of your back that you have been carrying around for years good luck and have fun when yu are cleaning out your house of all that stuff that is weighing you down. And when it is all said and done it wont take you hours to clean, no more stuff in your way.

I had\have the same problem.
What has helped us is creating storage. Most homes have very few closets and cabinets.
We typically have more stuff than space.

I bought cheap shelves and boxes at ikea and started giving everything a home. It truly has truly helped with the clutter!!!

Be creative with your space. Keep your eyes open for ingenious storage. I use a nice cloth shoe "rack" (kind that hangs in closet) in my itty bitty toilet room. It doesn't take up much room and it's perfect for 12 rolls of t.p. AND some magazines!! :-)

We've also given away or thrown away a lot of things that haven't been used in a long time.

Give everything a home and it should make your life easier.

Rule number one is bring in less stuff. Most of the crap we have laying around is completely unnecessary.

Rule number two is start small. Don't say, "Today I'm going to go through all my clothes!" Just set your sights on one drawer. Really be ruthless! Give it to Goodwill or throw it out unless it's something you really use. No saving for "someday"--if someday comes, you'll buy another. You'll get a feeling of accomplishment and want to do another drawer and another.

Rule three is "a place for everything and everything in it's place." Most cluttered people have fourteen of something because they can never find the one they have--rolls of tape, nail clippers, chapstick, etc--so they buy more. Group all like things together and put them in one place. You'll have to do more traveling around the house to get it when you need it, but, whatever!

Finally, start with the least cluttered room first--same logic--you won't feel overwhelmed. Once it's decluttered, follow above advice about putting things away in their place and limiting what you buy.

As you move from room to room, put away everything you got out and then find 3 extra things to put away. When you find a few extra minutes, take a drawer or file or cupboard and quickly straighten it and purge it. If you are a book buyers, try to think of some friend to share a book with or donate to your local library every so often. Pass magazines on to a friend or take them to the waiting room at your local hospital.

Clean up every evening, and for every one thing you bring into to the house take one out - garbage or give away. Some non-profits will pick stuff up from your house, use that as an excuse to clean a closet, or drawer evry couple of months.

When I do a full clean up (like Spring cleaning), I seperated everything into 4 different categories.
1. Stuff to keep
2. Stuff to sell
3. Stuff to give away
4. Stuff to throw away
Hope this helps. Good Luck
