What is the substance that makes mascara smell so bad?

What brand are you using? Mine doesn't smell bad.

I have never noticed any mascara that I have had to have a bad smell unless it's gone bad. How long have you had it? Any more than 3 months you might want to consider throwing it out.

it might be expired... but if it's brand new and it smells bad, it must be one of the chemical ingredients.
remember, once opened - mascara can only be kept for 2-3 months max. If you keep it for longer periods of time, then bacteria may accumulate and cause an eye infection when you apply the old mascara.

if a mascara smells bad than thats not a good sign. Time to toss.

I completely agree they do scent humorous yet I did word that Maybellines one with the aid of one mascara smells the right same as L'Oreals Voluminous Lashes,its has a scent yet not a bad one (in my view) its smells like plant life :)

I know what you mean! I am so sorry, cuz I have no clue. It might be the color, because I have some clear mascara and it doesn't smell like anything. If the stink really bothers you, try it!

Some mascara's have TAR in them.. You would not want to be putting that harmful product on your eyes would you? Your eyes are very delicate.

If it's waterproof, might be the chemical that makes it that way.
Mine never smells bad, but then mine is botanical. It's not "waterproof" but doesn't run, and I slept in it last night and I didn't have raccoon eyes!

If your mascara smells, throw it out.
It's probably gone bad.
