PBS did a special on this a few years ago. Using the same amount of dishes with the same amount of soil, they had different people of different cultures wash the dishes as well as a dishwasher.
The dishwasher (without any pre-washing or pre-rinshing) got the dishes cleaner AND used less water than anyone in any place or culture was able to by hand.
So, getting a high efficiency dishwasher that requires no pre-rinsing is a great way to "go green."

rarely is something like this "always true". some folks pre-wash the dishes, then, when they're clean, put 'em in the dishwasher. in that case, they're mostly using the dishwasher to clean off the germs. and it uses more water. on the other hand, if you clean off the table, put the stuff in the dishwasher, and start it, it clearly uses less water than washing by hand in most cases. however, i suppose i could wash by hand, in a dish pan, with a rinse pan, and use less water than the dishwasher, but i'm not at all sure i'd really like to eat off those dishes. there are an awful lot of cases in this world where there just isn't a yes or no answer.

The dishwasher is the saver. It uses about 11 gallons total, as I recall. If you do them by hand instead you will have the hot water running more than that for washing and rinsing. After that you still have to dry. The dishwasher is all in one and on modern ones pre-rinsing is not really necessary.
Dishes get cleaner and you save the effort of drying them which are two bonuses beyond the water savings.

Make sure your dishwasher is full and use the shortest cycle. If you only have a few dishes then do by hand use a dishpan and don't leave the water run while washing. Both can save water you just have to do it right.

The dishwasher gets them cleaner because it is able to use hotter water than when you hand wash. however i think it takes less water to wash them by hand.

According to the sales man at sear when we were buying a new dishwasher, today's dishwashers use less water as they have become more and more efficient

It is cleaner to use dish washer, but it waste a lot of water.
Use dish washer does not really save that much time, because you still have to clean the dishes first and then put them into the dish washer.

Depends on the size of the load of dishes you want to wash. If it is a regular amount (dishes from a meal for four), it is cheaper to wash them by hand.

doing them by hand as most people tend to rinse the dishes off before putting them in the dish washer anyway
