Why do people hate rap? Well, I do agree that it is partially a lack of understanding, and I also think that for some small-minded, uneducated people, it probably does have a lot to do with race. But as far as everyone else, I'd say it's simply because they don't realize that they're basing their opinion on only one dimension of the genre instead of the genre as a whole. Not all rap/hip hop is like what we see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If they were willing to dig a little deeper into the genre (which unfortunately, a lot of people aren't, since the rap they do hear repulses them and also, no one likes to be wrong), they'd discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity (i.e. - conscious rap, Christian rap, old school rap, etc.). As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than money, sex, drugs and murder. For example:
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Lupe Fiasco
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)
And a lot of people have either forgotten them, don't "get" their music or have never heard of them at all.
Unfortunately, we'll rarely (if ever) find any of them in the mainstream media nowadays. A lot of the real hip hop artists have been put on the backburner or are stuck in the underground circuit. Why? Because for the most part, greedy record companies and good ol' Corporate America have conditioned the masses and flooded the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money as opposed to artists who have actual talent, variety and substance. That's what the real problem is.
p.s. - And to BigJake418...
"My big reason is that to me, it's not really music. No guitars...just alot of noise, especially live. Rap does not come across good, live."
It seems that you're assuming that absolutely no hip hop artist on Earth has ever played a musical instrument. Fat Jon (aka - Fat Jon The Ample Soul Physician; piano/keyboards), The Roots (drums, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards), Nicolay (keys, guitars, bass, drums), the late Jay Dee (aka - J Dilla, who played 20 instruments), and many others have all played their own instruments at one time or another. And if you've never heard of these people (and you probably haven't), that's because for the most part, they're all underground hip hop artists.
Still unconvinced? Check out this beat making video from a French producer named 20SYL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OhDC5GUJYw
And as for your other statement, I wonder, have you ever been to a hip hop concert? Not a regular ol' rap concert, but a real hip hop concert? I have, and the ones I've been to sounded great live. Then again, the artists I listen to aren't all over the mainstream either. Coincidence? I think not.

There are a few reasons people don't like rap. My big reason is that to me, it's not really music. No guitars...just alot of noise, especially live. Rap does not come across good, live. Plus, it's all about beats. Real music has alot more to offer than just a beat. It has nothing to do with race, for me anyway. If these rappers could rock out a little, like Living Colour, it would be ok. Realistically, how much rap can you hear before it all starts to sound the same? I know some of the newer rock out there isn't much better, but at least they play instruments.
