There are now over 3 million people of Vietnamse background living in over 90 countries in the world; almost 1.5 million of whom in the US alone. These folks sent from 4 to 5 billion dollars back to their relatives in Vietnam, making the amount one of the largest sources of hard currency earned by the country and it's free and clear.

Overseas Vietnamese also return to their homeland to visit by the hundreds of thousand each year and bringing more money to spend while they are there. Many have sent money to invest in the country's new enterprises, contributing to Vietnam's current economic boom. Others have gone back to do business or consulting work there, taking with them the technological and managerial know how the've acquired in Europe and America.

Another resource among the emigre community that Vietnam will tap on are the retirees. These men and women, having made their marks in the West, will bring back not only money but skills and many contacts as well. At age 55 to 62, they'll are expected to be active for many more years to come.

Above is an excellent answer economy-wise. However, many bad immigrators have been spreading wrong impression about vietnamese cultures/people by their lacks of education. Remember that nowadays, MOST of the immigrators are not skilled or intellectual workers (because there is a flow of intellectuals back to VN); they are firstly communists who try to find a safe place for retirement after long time being corrupt, secondly uneducated people who do not thoroughly understand the life outside VN (which could be better or much worse) and thirdly the losers whom unnecessary to any countries.
