A record number of gang-related homicides occurred in Los Angeles County last year despite a truce among some warring factions, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says. Preliminary figures issued by the department on Tuesday showed 800 gang-related deaths in 1992, compared with the previous year's 771, which had been a record. The department said that although a truce among black gangs had held for the most part, violence among Hispanic gangs had jumped.
