A man's sperm and woman's egg are put together in a dish and when the sperm penetrates the egg that is conception and an embryo is formed. Some of the embryos may be frozen using liquid nitrogen to be saved and used in a later cycle.

an embryo is the result of a sperm and egg - usually for couples who need IVF they keep them frozen to try and get them to have babies etc.
Embryos can also be used in research - usually non human embryos are used for this purpose.
