I am struggling with this right now. the swap is easy, getting dvd's to burn is another story. When i first switched them, i could burn no prob....2 months later,(probably after receiving "updates") nothing but "no disc in drive" and the status of the burner is "Locked" ; all other parts of the drive function well...just can't burn anymore. This may have something to do with the drive (from the my other pc) being "digitally signed"-I bought my older pc new 14 months ago

Sure. As long as you have room for the CD writer. You'll also need to make sure you have a spot on the IDE cable (assuming it is IDE) and that you have a spot on the power cable.

you can ... and attach it to the same cable as the other one if possible .. try not to put it on the same cable as a harddrive ... and the jumper in the back --- check the one thats in the machine now and if its a master then set the one ur installing to slave and put it in the middle of the cable ... not the end ...

yes you should be ok as long as you change one to master and one to slave(little jumpers on back of drive)
