DC started as National Periodicals. In the '30s National published Detective Comics. In Detective Comics 27 Batman appeared for the first time. In the '50s National changed the name to DC comics after one of their best selling titles. Why the chose DC comics as their names instead on AC for Action Comics (the Superman title I have never known.

It stands for Detective Comics. While The Batman did not appear until issue 27 of that magazine Detective Comics was the first comic book to feature material specifically created for the book, prior to that comic books featured reprints of newspaper comic strips. So when National periodical merged with All-American they took the name DC to honor that book
