It depends upon the severity of the mental illness. I can tell you it is nothing at all as portrayed on TV and movies. Do not base it on the entertainment industry. OK
I have been diagnosed with (clinical depression), this is caused by the anti seizure med. that I have to take. Before I was finely diagnosed and (hospitalized) and put onto anti depressants I tried to kill myself. Some may say why would someone try to kill themselves? I was a single mother of 3 sons, was having (uncontrolled epileptic seizures) 3/5 seizures @ day. My father was an alcoholic’s (leaving my sons with my parents) WAS NOT AN OPTION for me. I had no choice but have them placed into FOSTER CARE. This was nessicary so that I could get myself: I had to get well enough to care and provide not only for my sons, but for myself too. Needless to say the feelings of WORTHLESNESS, only worsened, after placing them into foster care. I felt that I was a usless person. Since I could not even take care of my own sons,or myself.
life was not even worth living.for me at that point.
This feeling was (exaggerated) by the underlying (chemical imbalance to my brain) from the anti seizure drugs.
After attempting suicide, I was hospitalized. While in the hospital a physicratast came to my room, and talked with me,about my illness. So I willingly admitted myself to a mental hospital as an (INPATIANT): To my great relief, it was nothing at all as I suspected it would be. Nothing at all as the movies had made it appear to be. It was actually the first time in my life that I felt truley safe. It was the perfect place to get the physicratiac help that I so desperately needed.
Once a day I had to talk with a clinical therapist: We had several kinds of therapy every day except weekends.. One of the treetments was called (art therapy). Our theropast asked us as (a group of about 6 patients) to think of ((how we feel when we have a certain emotion)).,We were asked to use colored paint, to express our emotions. Another therapy was to (look around us) and choose an object in the room, and this was us, we would tell why, we were that object, and why. Another theropy was called (relaxation) theropy, learning to cope with stress, and anguish. To control our breating, and calm ourselves down, when feeling anxioty.
I can not begin to tell you ((how truly liberating it was for me)) to find out that there were lots of people out there, who felt exactly as bad about themselves as I did.
We were totally safe from (outside harm), the security in the hospital, ment no harm to us from other patiants either.
In fact it was pleasant to be able to talk to other patients suffering with the same illness I had. I actually feared the outside much, much, much more than I did the other patiants.
Of corse patients with much more severe illnesses such as schizophrenia or (by polar disorder) for instance, are in a more restricted environment. However the care and treatment they receive is every bit as caring, and helpeful for tham as what I experianced.

People that are admitted to psych ward generally have lost complete touch with reality OR have demonstrated a suicidal or homicidal threat.

Psychiatric wards, in the US, are usually reserved for acute cases. Most other mental illnesses are now monitored on an out patient basis. The psych wards main focus is to ready the patient for out patient care and the staff generally spends most of it's time monitoring behavior and prescribing psychotropic meds and monitoring the effectiveness of the drugs.

The length of the stay is usually short, under 5 days.

BTW: It is generally boring for the patients in a psych ward, depending of course on the facility, but budget cuts usually strap the facility for resources even though patients would clearly benefit from therapeutic activities.

Peace.

Well from personal experience... (worked in one, not been in one) Yet... Heh heh...

It is like a zombie house. Some people get to wander and some are either restrained or stay in their rooms. Some are violent (usually upon admittance first and then they calm down) and some are completely catatonic and just sit there.

Thorazine in the right doses makes for a nice happy camper!

Depends... They don't generally keep people all lumped in together anymore. There are rec rooms and television rooms and private rooms... Group therapy and private.

Most people are not there long term. Some people have to be because of severe schizophrenia that does not enable them to become productive members of society.

There are usually wards that seperate conditions. It is pretty much like the movies that you must have seen? Not too different. They are usually ratty and run down though, not as nice and often smelly! Most of them are locked wards some are out patient and that allows them to wander the grounds.

It depends on what a specific individual is hospitalized for, as far as what daily activities occur.

The reason for an individual to be hospitalized is almost always because he or she is a threat to their own safety or others. There are various mental health disorders that can lead to this, including depression, schizophrenia, delusional disorders, and many others.

People are not usually secluded while hospitalized.

Yes a Dr. can commit you if he feels you are a threat to yourself I am not sure about Virginia but in Texas it is 30 days Okay so I looked at this site and I am pretty sure the answer to your question is yes. The thing you need to figure out is why you are cutting yourself. What is going on when you do this? If your therapist isn't helping you then fire them and find another one. It is so easy to be misdiagnosed and get the wrong medication. Sometimes you need to talk to your primary care physician. then have them help you find a therapist who can help you
