The hyper extension of flexing your wrist up and down will help CAUSE carpel tunnel.

I have had a few times when my right wrist felt like something bad was happening. So I would sleep with a wrist support that kept it straight while I slept. That seems to have repaired it before it got bad.

The carpel tunnel is just that a tube or tunnel that nerves run through. If it stays in a flexed position, for an uncomfortable period of time, the nerve or nerves can become pinched and inflamed causing carpel tunnel.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is where the tendons from your fore arm muscles get inflamed and they dont' fit in the tunnel.

Generally it's caused from overuse so as a drummer you might be prone to it and their might be nothing you can do about it.

Prevention wise, I personally am not into the stretching, as their have been studies shown both ways that it does or doesn't help.

Water is good but really there is no miracle prevention.

My dad, as well as wikipedia, told me to take breaks when i'm doing something like typing. so keep drumming but make sure to put in some breaks! i don't mean long term breaks-- i just mean a few minutes to rest your wrist.

I'v not heard of anything to avoid it. What causes it is repetitive motion. So, I guess if you quit the repetitive motion, it will. But I highly doubt you want to do that.
