I believe that the words "her," "she," and "their" are all personal pronouns. Thus, you will want to do what the above poster suggested. Simply state what happened. I cannot think of a way for you to thank your family without using a personal pronoun. Maybe say "thanks to the Johnson family," only substitute your own family name, of course. Heh.

Why do you have to thank your family in an academic essay?

Also, I don't think you don't really need to use "the experimentor" in your essay. Instead of saying "the experimentor performed a particular action", you could just state the action that was done.

I don't know what the experiment is, but it would be in a similar form as, "The two chemicals were mixed together." instead of "The experimentor mixed the two chemicals."

EDIT: For the example you gave you could say "The expected result was rainfall; however, this was not the case."

I still don't really understand why you need to thank anybody unless it is specifically one of the parameters of the assignment. In my experience I have never had to do that.
