With Red-ear sliders...
Males have-
- Long front claws* (They use the long claws in mating rituals)
- In-curved bellies
- Long, thin tails
- Cloacal openings (vents) not right against the base of the tail
- Males tend to be smaller and more colorful than the same age females*
Females have-
- Front claws same length as rear claws
- Flat or out-curved bellies
- Fatter, wider tails
- Cloacal opening near the base of the tail
The starred items (*) are pretty limited to sliders and related pond turtles.
You also cannot easily tell the sex of a turtle until they hit about 4" long.

How old/big is your slider?. There's a good answer below and I would guess a male from what you have said. Is his tail pointy (male) or more rounded/blunt (female)?

it is a male! males will have VERY long tails, and short claws, females have long claws and short tails, and are normally bigger than males, and have flat underbodies, and males have more of a curved underbody. And yes, they won't eat as much as the females, especially when one is present, they want to be polite and let them eat more. Males will once in awhile show their stuff, and its grey, so don't worry, its just him peeing, and its not his intestine.
