Don't know whatyour age is, so I can't say what would be the best type for you to take.
If you're relatively young though, take tap-dancing. It teaches not only dancing, but also high degrees of coordination and rhythm.

Your age doesn't matter, don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. I didn't start dancing until I was 22, so I should know!
Personally I have done Salsa and some Argentine Tango and loved both! So much so that I now help teach a beginners Salsa class!
You can try absolutely any style of dancing that you like: ballroom, latin, salsa, jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, belly dancing, I could go on. Why not give as many styles a try as you can, then make a decision.
Good luck!

If you're wanting to dance with people your own age, it would be useful if we knew what that was. Ballroom could be right if you're old enough. You can learn salsa while you're at it, since most ballroom studios seem to teach salsa as well these days. If you're adolescent, hip-hop, which looks silly for adults. Pre-teen, try a combination of ballet and jazz. For younger folks a little tap on the side isn't a bad idea either. Just go have fun.

I am currently taking ballet and ballroom. I would suggest Ballet for starters, most or all dance can be improved if you have at least a little bit of ballet technique. It's also very strengthening and good for your bones and muscles. Ballet is the ultimate work out. If you are looking for people of the same age and of the opposite sex, i would suggest ballroom. It's fun and just about anyone can do it. It's use full too, you dint just have to do competitions, it's the kind of dance that you can use everywhere you go.

I love all forms of dance since it is an expression of our inner selves which can have many shades or even extremes. Out of the above, I'd choose salsa, ballroom, folk and bhangra. It can change with my mood. My other favorites are ballet, kathak, bharathnatyam and many forms of Indian dance. I think kuchipudi is one among them, I'm not sure. Its an expression of emotions so every form is extremely beautiful.

I do all types of dancing! If you are a teenager or older, it would be tough to start now (I started when I was 3), but I suggest hip-hop, ballet, modern (contemporary movement), or jazz! Dancing is no doubt a great hobby (it keeps you in shape and it's loads of fun!)

One more suggestion: Scottish country dancing. Really fun, good exercise, attended by people of all ages. Easy to start with, more challenging as you go along. Classes and dances available worldwide, great music, men in kilts.
