I would go with the lens cleaner/polish. It may be a temporary fix, but then again, so is completely replacing them, after all, if replacing them was permanent, you wouldn't be asking this question as they wouldn't have done it in the first place, right? :)
Aftermarket parts are definitely NOT the same as the dealership parts. They are made much cheaper and often don't fit quite as well. However, for the price difference, if you decide to replace them, I'd go for the price savings over the factory lamps on a '97.

I work for a after market supplier for crash parts.From what ive seen the rubbing compounds are a temporary fix.The best thing to do is replace the light.If i was you i would buy them from a after market supplier instead of a dealership.Its the same light but its around 300 dollars higher at a dealership.The dodge dealership will charge you around 3 to 4 hundred for each light.A after market light should be around a hundred bucks.

parts stores, autozone, etc. have a plastic cleaner that is supposed to work good.
