Well, thats a GOOD question.
I'd paraphrse it, "Is thinking a method for exploring an unlimitted number of possibilities or is it limitted (like a road) to discovery of what we might expect to find along a given avenue of thinking?
Probably both. But our process is very dependent on past experience. So our thinking is limitted to comparing or contrasting past experience in order to explain what our current experience is like. Same or different.
Thinking is then a process of comparing past experience to explain our current situation.
Novelty is a problem because we are limitted by our past experiences in order to explain the now.
When past experience says the world must be flat our thought process generates reasons to prove this is true.
Current brain research indicates that our primitive brain leads in decisionmaking and that the "higher brain" makes up a nice story to support it.
So, we're stuck in the rut of fear, desire, seeking status, etc. by our old brain as it decides by instinctive drives; and the new brain is a fool telling folktales with word pictures that give it "meaning" .

I don't get it, could you splain more? Thinking is best when it is listening to your intuition. You got an expensive computer up there that is human, if you are. It has all your information already so you only have to ask it questions and it answer with explanations, if you keep working with it. You shouldn't think about problems, it is much better at it. Just keep asking questions, that's your job. They are finding our that you can't answer nearly as good as your subconscious. They figured out that it is 5 times better. Remember it has reports from all the organs in your body, it sees what you see, feels what you feel, knows you questions before you do, it probably gave you the question as best as you would take it. We block it's working. That is the best we can do, almost. We think we think, but they're finding our that our thinking blocks the subconscious from working properly. Humbling, isn't it. That explains why we a supposed to be humble. Neat, huh? It also explain why the world is such a mess. Check it out. It is absolutely true.
