Why do men hit their pregnant wife/girlfriend? What do you think of men who hit women in general?

I work in a hospital and it is disgusting how many females come in to get checked because of domestic violence.. what would drive a man to do something so sick and cowardly?

Ok, so here's my whole spiel.
From a moral standpoint at least, any type of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse is 100% wrong, and under no circumstances should be tolerated. You and I must unconsciously make the assumption that, true or not, anyone that we meet MUST believe this as well. We do this because the alternative is a constant fear that our world is not safe, and even our closest friends and family may cause us harm. Of course violence is a very complex social and psychological issue, and I am by no means an expert.
According to the work of the sociologist Dr. Lonnie Athens, those who deliberately commit serious violent acts, have a history of violent abuse, or other psychological trauma where violence was used in a social context. Through a lengthy process Athens describes as Violent Socialization, or "Violentization", a victim of such trauma may resolve in the future to respond violently to perceived threats to his person. Athens describes four stages to this process: Brutalization, Belligerency, Violent Performance(s), and finally, Virulence.
The gist of it is that violent actors do so in order to reconcile their self-image to their past violent experiences. People are not born with a tendency to serious violence. Rather any person may choose to become violent given their experience and past choices. This explains the crucial distinction of why many people who experience violent psychological trauma may not become dangerously violent. Here is some suggested reading about Dr Athens.

First of all I believe this men probably were victims of some kind of abuse when the were young. I don't think this is an excuse for their behavior, but think about it what can we actually do. We can't do nothing much if you ask me. All we can do is call the cops on them the next day they will be bailed out. What I think about this men is that they feel that they need to hit a women to feel important or surperior. I believe they think that that is the only way they will own respect. Theres really nuthing we can do but stay away from them and untill we women do they are going to continue with this abuse.

I don't know why men hit their wives or girlfirends pregnant or not, but it disgusts me, and in my humble opinion, guys who do that don't deserve to be called men, because a REAL MAN would NEVER hit a woman. I attacked a guy who used to be a friend of mine because he backhanded his girlfriend across the chest, put him through a plate glass window and through the front windshield of his pick up. That's how much it upset me.

What drives some guys to it, is anger, they get a mean temper and don't know how to control their temper, also if they drink, and when they are drunk are agressive that doesn't help either.

I have never in my 70 years been able to come up with a valid reason for any man ever to hit any woman. I understand that in a marriage that things can get a little"tight" sometimes, but for a man to put his hands on a woman in anger is vile, repugnant and totally immoral.

They are coward, they should try that with a real man. They will get their *** kick. I feel so sorry for them, I wish we can go for "an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth. You hit your wife with your right hand, chop it off. I know I sound cruel, that is the only way for them to stop hitting women.

Males feel they are in control. It's in their genes to be dominating. It's natural for men to be in control but I don't know why they they hit women. Something must be wrong with them...or it might be something in the past...Maybe they were treated badly when they were children and hittin was always the punishment.

I was with a guy that hit me while I was pregnant and I left him soon after, a guy that hits a women is not a man :) :) :)

You said it. There sick and cowardly and need to have there butts kicked for it. It must be hard for you to see so much of that first hand. I sympathise with you.
