fwiw, Timothy Leary, once said about the extreme end of the environmental movement - "it is not about the environment, it is about turning the clock back to the pre-industrial age, they are at odds with modern technology".
Maybe they have this idea that before the industrial revolution, everything was clean, pure, and simple. They take the benefits of modernization for granted, and now see only the negative aspects.
Like most fundamentalists, they want to go back to what they see as a cleaner, purer place.

I believe this story best exemplifies what you're talking about--in an extreme, of course:
http://www.infowars.com/articles/nwo/population_reduction_pianka_misanthropes_mas_death.htm
People come to this philosophy in many ways--too many to explore here, really. And not all hate the individual. Rather, it's the desrtuctive and wasteful group they hate, and those individuals they seeas part of that group--the consummate consumer.
For many it seems to be a causation---they look at the world and see nothing but avarice, evil and prodigious excess and waste. A big, fat pig at the front of the boat, eating and wasting more of the group's provisions each day, bringing the vessel closer and closer to tipping.
The inquity of man has reached a level that many can't take. This perspective was formed in many ways by the crafty hands of the media (TV, film, news, and, yes, music).
This is a huge subject.
If you want the boiled down version of the person you have asked about, it's one who hates himself so much (or perhaps his parents or roots) that that hate has been turned on the world. Extreme environmentalism is just one institution where this form of hate is acceptable.
If you want to see things in art that address these issues in various ways, and you are old enough to view them, check out:
George Orwell's Animal Farm
The Matrix (Agent Smith is a personification of this)
The PBS feature, Affluenza (http://www.pbs.org/kcts/affluenza/)

There is much more out there. As you explore this question just keep askng why and keep an open mind to all perspectives. Truth lies at the end of the objective path.
Thank you for your question and what I have learned from it.

"Greenies" do not want to erase all human influence. The goal is to minimize the negative impact on the environment. Nobody is silly enough to think that no trees will be cut down. Replant trees where you cut them. If you wipe out an entire ecosystem, such as the Amazon, that has a negative impact on our lives. If we keep treating our planet the way we do now, human beings will be eliminated much sooner.

Doesn't Rain Forrest's help it to rain
maybe that's what's lacking in Australia
not enough trees!!!
we have caused that much damage in OZ in less than 200 years
we have cut down millions of trees & destroyed all our rivers,
man in oz should be ashamed of the damage they have done
so i can understand why the greenies are the way they are.
They are trying to save the very little we have left
you heard the news the other day about how Australia is the worst hit by global warming

Man, we are tostaed allready, just too lazy to turn off our AC in our cars long enough to look outside and realize it. You wanna cut down every tree, your too late, they are dyeing on there own now. You wanna save every tree? you can try, but I dont think it will help much. I give us 50 years tops at this rate. Then it will be anarchy world wide for water and food.
Do the math, population is doubling every 25 years since 1989, what a ride !
